The general aim of the project is to empower children and youth to participate in decision-making processes in schools and increase the visibility of student councils in the community. Accordingly, the specific objectives of the project are as follows:
Based on the planned objectives, an improvement in the work of student councils in two high schools in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County is expected. This is primarily planned through the implementation of the educational programme "Let's Activate the Student Council". Through the programme the student council members will become familiar with their rights and responsibilities, communication with other school bodies, needs assessment, activity planning, and (self)evaluation of their work at the end of the school year. In addition to helping build the social and civic competencies of students, improving their knowledge and skills will directly enhance the position of the students they represent – all other students in the school. A stronger voice of students in the school will also contribute to developing closer relationships with the school staff and reduce young people's distrust in adults and vice versa. Such democratic processes contribute to a positive school climate, which is directly related to the quality of students' lives. A positive school climate enhances feelings of security and well-being and protects against risk factors for the development of mental difficulties (e.g., anxiety, depression) or peer violence. Efficient work of student councils can lead to a greater connection between the school and the community, as students develop various activities with community stakeholders or directly respond to identified needs (e.g., organizing humanitarian or volunteer actions).
The project is implemented from January 1st, 2023 to December, 31st 2024 with the financial support of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County.
