The PLACE model in Croatian language classes

ABOUT ACTIVITY

On Thursday, February 9th, we presented the PLACE model of service-learning to 25 teachers of Croatian language in secondary schools in the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, at the invitation of Melita Rabak, prof.

The PLACE model is based on the methodology of service-learning and includes 5 stages:

1. Prepare. This stage includes an assessment of the school's capacity, the education of its teachers and a needs analysis conducted in cooperation with the students.

2. Link. Schools connect with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and NGOs. The faculty can assist with the implementation of the model by appointing student mentors, who can share their service-learning experience with the students. The NGO is chosen according to the needs analysis and helps students design an activity to solve a problem.

3. Action. The agreed-upon activities are carried out in cooperation with all participants.

4. Celebrate. The results of the activities are shared and presented to the media, the parents and the wider community.

5. Effect. The last stage includes an evaluation of the process, the reflection on the skills that were learned and the sustainability of the results.

The teachers who were present also shared their experiences, from planning radio shows to conducting research on certain topics. We presented them with the results of the pilot implementation of the PLACE model at the Mijo Mirković School of Economics in Rijeka and talked more about the referendum that the students organized.

We ended the lecture with the presentation of the manual Service Learning Upscaling Social Inclusion for Kids.
